Head Coach Steve Florio
Steve Florio was named the head coach of the Purdue-Fort Wayne women's volleyball program in February of 2014.
Florio has been at Purdue-Fort Wayne for over a decade, previously as associate head coach. He has helped guide the program to a combined record of 238-115 during his time as associate head coach with the Mastodons, including NCAA Tournament berths in 2009 and 2012.
As the lead recruiter for the program, his recruits have earned a pair of All-Region Honorable Mention honors. Additionally his recruits have racked up numerous Summit League awards, including a Summit League Player of the Year, two Summit League Setters of the Year, one Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, one Summit League Newcomer of the Year, 18 All-League honorees, and five players on the All-Freshman Team.
He has helped guide Purdue-Fort Wayne to a Summit League Tournament berth every season since the Mastodons joined the league - the only team in the league to accomplish the feat during that span.
Florio has been involved with many volleyball conventions as a presenter. He has recently worked with the AVCA National Convention, the MIVCA Coaches Convention, and the Wisconsin H.S. Volleyball Coaches Convention.
A current member of the AVCA Assistant Coaches Committee, Florio has had multiple items published in the AVCA Magazine "Coaching Volleyball" and his work can also be found on the "Team Talk: Talking Your Way to Volleyball Success" DVD.
Prior to Purdue-Fort Wayne, Florio served four years as an assistant coach at Hofstra University. While there, he assisted in leading the Pride to two conference championships and back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances in 1999 and 2000.
Florio’s eight years of high school experience is highlighted by five years as the head coach of the boys varsity volleyball team for Division Ave./MacArthur High School in Levittown, N.Y. While there, Florio led the team to its first-ever playoff appearance in 2000 and a Nassau County Conference II-A Championship in 2003. After helping the team to the conference championship, Florio was named Conference Coach of the Year.
During the summers of 2005 and 2006, Florio served as head coach of the Great Lakes High Performance Team at the USA High Performance Tournament. In 2006, he lead the team to a third place finish at the tournament and a bronze medal. It was the first time the Great Lakes Region had won a medal.
Since the summer of 1993, Florio has lent his experience to camps and clinics at the University of Illinois, Ball State University, Bowling Green State University, Syracuse, Hofstra, Purdue-Fort Wayne, the Premier Elite Camp, World Volleyball Training Center, and the Great Lakes High Performance Camp.
He played two years of volleyball at Nassau (N.Y.) Community College in 1994 and 1995 before transferring to NCAA Division I St. Francis College (Pa.) and playing two years for the Red Flash. At Nassau, he helped the Lions to a regional championship in 1994 and a runner-up spot in 1995. At St. Francis, Florio served as a defensive specialist for the Red Flash.
Florio received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from St. Francis (Pa.) in 1998 and a master’s degree in secondary education from Dowling College in 2002.
